shooting at a Greek Orthodox church
ISHTARTV.COM – Jordan
Thousands of people gathered at St. George’s Greek Orthodox Church in
Hamoud, in Jordan’s Karak Governorate, on Sunday, October 25, 2026, to mourn
eight of the nine Christians killed in a shooting during a funeral gathering
two days earlier. The ninth victim, Mohammed al-Qasous, was buried on Monday,
October 26.
According to International Christian Concern (ICC), the coffins
were carried through crowds of mourners, each draped in the Jordanian flag.
Tributes to the victims have also spread widely on social media, reflecting the
grief of families and communities affected by the attack.
Nine Men Killed During Funeral Gathering
The nine men were shot dead on Friday, October 23, when gunmen opened
fire during a funeral at Hammoud Church, a Greek Orthodox church in Karak
Governorate. Around 200 people were reportedly attending the gathering.
Forty other people were injured in the attack, including two who
remained in critical condition, according to ICC’s October 26 report.
The attack shocked the local community, turning a funeral gathering into
a scene of mass casualties and deepening concerns over the safety of religious
gatherings.
Three Suspects Detained Following Shootout
Jordanian security forces detained three men on Monday following a
shootout in Karak Governorate. All three were reportedly wounded.
As of the publication of ICC’s report, no extremist group had claimed
responsibility for the attack, and authorities had not disclosed whether the
suspects were linked to any particular organization.
Muslims Express Solidarity with Jordan’s Christian Community
The attack prompted expressions of solidarity from Muslims across Jordan
with the country’s Christian community. Muslims were also among those injured
in the shooting.
Christians make up nearly three percent of Jordan’s predominantly Muslim
population. The public expressions of support highlighted the wider impact of
the attack on the country’s communities and the shared grief following the loss
of life.
ICC Calls for Justice and Accountability
Shawn Wright, president of International Christian Concern, condemned
the attack and called for those responsible to be held accountable through due
process.
“Friday’s attack on the Hammoud Church in Jordan is a heinous assault on
the universal human right to worship freely,” Wright said, according to ICC. He
also expressed solidarity with those mourning the victims and called for
justice.
The funerals and public mourning have placed renewed attention on the
protection of religious communities and the right to worship and gather safely.
