James Hasdo Hido and Rami Nouri Siawsh, members of the Kurdistan Region Parliament representing the Christian component, have called on political blocs and parties to take immediate action to end the paralysis affecting the region’s legislature and resume its legislative and oversight activities.
The call came in a joint statement published by Kurdistan 24 on Monday, October 19, 2026, marking two years since the elections for the sixth session of the Kurdistan Parliament, held on October 20, 2024.
Warning About the Consequences of Continued Paralysis
The two lawmakers stressed that continued political disagreements and the suspension of parliamentary work constitute a serious setback for the will of the electorate and undermine the foundations of democratic representation. They also warned of negative consequences at both the local and international levels.
According to the statement, the continuation of this situation could weaken public confidence in the constitutional institutions of the Kurdistan Region and limit their ability to fulfil their responsibilities in following up on government activities and overseeing official performance.
The lawmakers cautioned that the ongoing political deadlock serves, in their view, only those seeking to undermine the interests of the Kurdistan Region and its diverse communities.
Call to Put the Public Interest First
The statement urged all political blocs and parties to prioritise the higher interests of the region and work to remove the obstacles preventing the parliament from resuming its activities, enabling it to fulfil its constitutional responsibilities in legislation and oversight.
The two lawmakers emphasised the importance of activating the legislative institution as a framework bringing together the constitutional authorities and representing the will of citizens while responding to the requirements of the democratic process.
Two Years Since the Elections Without a Resumption of Parliamentary Work
The appeal comes as political disagreements continue over completing the procedures required to activate the Kurdistan Parliament elected in October 2024. Various political parties have called for an end to the stalemate and the resumption of the legislature’s work.
The parliament’s activation is particularly important for the region’s communities, including the Chaldean, Syriac, and Assyrian people and Armenians, as it provides a constitutional framework for political participation and for addressing issues related to citizens’ rights and interests.
