A report from Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) has
revealed that almost two-thirds of the world’s population, more than 5.4
billion people, live in countries where serious violations of religious freedom
take place.
The 2025 “Religious Freedom in the World” report, officially launched on
21st October in the Houses of Parliament, was presented to UK politicians,
faith leaders, and students to highlight the worsening situation faced by
religious minorities.
According to the report, almost two-thirds of humanity, over 5.4 billion
people, live in countries "in which serious violations of religious
freedom occur".
Speaking yesterday, David Smith, the UK Government’s Special Envoy for
Freedom of Religion or Belief, referenced the findings in a speech at the
Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office.
He said, there are "restrictions on the freedom of assembly, war
and conflict, and increasing religious nationalism" that are "driving
persecution based on religion or belief".
Mr Smith stated the government was working to strengthen international
coalitions defending freedom of belief, describing faith-based advocacy as “a
vital part of global human rights protection".
The report and speeches come at an important time, as ACN is launching
its annual “Red Week” campaign, which begins on 15th November, to raise
awareness of persecuted Christians and call the Church to prayer.
Buildings and cathedrals across the UK are being illuminated in red to
show solidarity with those suffering for their faith.
The report highlights that Christians in parts of Africa, the Middle
East, and Asia remain among the most targeted groups, facing both state-level
repression and violent attacks from extremist movements.
ACN said the findings show “a growing and deeply concerning erosion of
religious freedom worldwide".
