Erbil - The secretary of the Chaldean National Congress has quit his post to accept the position of chairman of the Human Rights Commission in Iraqi Kurdistan.
Dhia Putros, who founded the party in 2002, has not succeeded in winning any seat in previous elections in Iraq.
Putros was quickly congratulated by Assyrians around the world including by the Chaldean Syriac Assyrian Popular Council.
In a letter released to the media, Kamel Zumaya, the representative of the Popular Council in Germany praised the appointment and "hopes Putros will use his new position to help displaced Assyrians in the region, and help in winning back confiscated property.''
The letter goes on saying the most important issue that needs to be addressed is "the lack of financial support of the displaced people in Iraqi Kurdistan.''
The Popular Council representative in the United States Odisho Khoshaba also congratulated Putros and urged him to ''uphold the freedom and dignity of all nationals and different religious sects.''
Putros will begin his new post in early 2013.
