News: Christian Block Walks Out in KRG Parliament Session

Erbil - Assyrian and Armenian  KRG Members of Parliament walked out of a session on Tuesday in protest.

The Kurdistan Region is expected to have a regional election early next year and the Parliament has been in the works of amending election law.

The representatives of the Chaldean Syriac Assyrian Popular Council and Assyrian Democratic Movement as well as the Armenian member walked out in response of the draft not including reserved seats for minorities.

In previous elections, five seats were reserved for Assyrians, five for Turkomens and one for Armenians.

The head of Chaldean Syriac Assyrian Popular Council list in the Parliament of the Kurdistan Region, Amir Goga said he presented a memorandum to the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region,  not to ratify on the proposed project, and to return it to the Parliament in order to add paragraph 6 which specifies a quota for the Christians and the Turkomens.

Goga said he was surprised by the insistence of the parliament presidency on not including the mentioned paragraph and deleting it completely from the proposal.

He hoped the paragraph will be included so as to lift the injustice against the Christian population and other minorities.
