The Ammunition Hill site in Jerusalem was the scene of a new discovery
that allows us to come closer to confirming one of the traditional biblical
accounts found in 2 Kings 19:35, Isaiah 37:36-38 and 2 Chronicles 32:21, in
addition to in Assyrian texts.
In biblical texts, Sennacherib's siege of Jerusalem, culminating in the
tribute of King Hezekiah of Judah, ends with the appearance of an angel who
kills 185.000 Assyrian soldiers in a single night.
The study of the ruins of the site was carried out by Stephen Compton,
an expert researcher in the archeology of the Near East. Compton considered
that there were the remains of Assyrian military camps from the year 700 BC,
during the siege of Jerusalem by the king Assyrian Sennacherib.
Additionally, Compton used mapping techniques to compare the Assyrian
reliefs depicted on the stone panels of Sennacherib's palace with aerial
photographs of Lachish, Israel. From the union of these two elements, a virtual
map was created that indicates the location of the camp.
Compton hopes that future archaeological excavations will provide more
information about this significant find.
