It
is with immense satisfaction and thanks to the Lord that ACERO today reports
our Sawra Village Project, one of the largest humanitarian initiatives in our
organisation’s history is making significant progress.
Initial
groundwork on the construction of Sawra Village near Semele, Northern Iraq
commenced in April and progress has been swift. Sawra Village is expected to
provide high-standard housing to between 500-600 IDPs and will contain
sanitation, cooking, laundry and recreational facilities.
This
week ACERO Secretary Andy Darmoo along with Dr Patrick Sookhdeo, International
Director and other Directors from our project partner the Barnabas Fund visited
the site and assessed the progress being made. On-the-ground work is under the
able direction of Gary Stockton and Samer Tadros.
Following
their inspection of the site, representatives of both organisations expressed
their great satisfaction at the swift progress being made.
On
behalf of ACERO Mr Darmoo thanked all involved in this significant project,
citing in particular The Rev’d Deacon Gewargis Shlemon who was instrumental in
procuring the land for ACERO’s Sawra Village and has offered ongoing
assistance.
This
is the largest housing project of its kind implemented in Northern Iraq by a
non-government humanitarian organisation in support of Assyrians and others who
have been the victims of forced displacement.
